New data from Cameroon’s Ministry of Health reveals stroke is now the primary cause of death among women, accounting for 9.0% of fatalities. This marks a significant shift in health concerns, surpassing previously leading causes like perinatal conditions (7.0%) and diabetes (4.7%). The data, sourced from MINSANTE’s DHIS2/ICD-11 system, highlights the growing impact of cerebrovascular diseases on female health. Infectious diseases such as malaria (4.1%) and HIV (3.8%) remain significant contributors to mortality, but are falling behind non-communicable diseases. Other leading causes include kidney diseases, respiratory infections, and hypertension. These statistics underscore the urgent need for preventative measures targeting non-communicable diseases in Cameroonian women.
