An inspection by Serbia’s State Audit Institution (DRI) revealed significant issues within state-run residential facilities for adults and the elderly with disabilities. These homes are operating without valid licenses, despite housing vulnerable individuals with mental, intellectual, physical, or sensory impairments. The audit also found these facilities are overcrowded and lack sufficient qualified staff to adequately care for residents. Furthermore, questions have been raised regarding the allocation and oversight of personal allowances intended for residents’ use. The DRI’s findings highlight systemic shortcomings in the provision of care and regulatory compliance within these state-funded institutions. The report prompts calls for immediate action to address the deficiencies and ensure the well-being of residents. Authorities have yet to publicly respond to the audit’s specific findings.
