Over the past year and a half, 40,148 housing loan contracts have been signed with state guarantees, indicating significant government involvement in the mortgage market. The second quarter of 2026 alone saw 7,776 such contracts finalized. These loans collectively represent a total value of 1.7309 billion euros. This data reveals that approximately 25% of all housing credit is now underpinned by a state guarantee. The increasing reliance on these guarantees suggests a strategy to stimulate homeownership and support the housing sector. The trend highlights a growing partnership between private lenders and the government in facilitating access to mortgages for citizens. This level of state backing is a notable development in the Portuguese housing finance landscape.
