King Felipe and Queen Letizia of Spain visited Ceuta 2.5 months after a surge of approximately 70,000 migrants crossed the border from Morocco, causing unrest among residents who felt abandoned by the rest of Spain. This was King Felipe’s first visit to Ceuta since his accession in 2014. The royal couple greeted residents warmly upon arrival, and the King delivered a speech emphasizing that Ceuta unequivocally belongs to Spain and is non-negotiable, while also expressing a desire for good relations with Morocco. Despite Morocco’s claim that Spain should relinquish Ceuta and Melilla, the King assured the people of Ceuta they would not be left alone. The visit, long-anticipated by the local population, comes after a period of crisis following the migrant influx, which led to protests across Spain and criticism of Prime Minister Sánchez’s handling of the situation. While most migrants returned to Morocco, several thousand remained, including many minors, prompting the clearing of a migrant camp on the beach.
