The wife of Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, Begoña Gómez, is facing criminal charges including corruption and abuse of power. A judge has mandated she report to court twice a month and surrender her passport, preventing her from leaving the country. The investigation, sparked by a complaint from a union with ties to far-right groups, alleges Gómez leveraged her position to advance her career and secure profitable deals for a Madrid university. She is also accused of lobbying for government support for companies in which she had financial interests. Gómez’s political party, the PSOE, denounces the prosecution as politically motivated and is rallying support under the hashtag #YoConBegoña. Opposition parties, including the Partido Popular, are calling for the Sánchez government’s resignation and early elections. This case adds to a series of corruption allegations facing the ruling socialist party, including investigations into former Prime Minister Zapatero and Sánchez’s brother.
