Spain’s list of major tax debtors decreased to 5,853 contributors by the close of 2025, according to recent data. These debtors collectively owe a total of €15.432 billion in unpaid taxes. Despite the reduction in the number of debtors, the overall tax debt has increased by over 12% when accounting for duplicate entries. The total debt decreased by 4.4% compared to the previous year, but this figure is skewed by the removal of duplicated records. This suggests that while some large debts have been resolved, new or ongoing tax avoidance continues to contribute to a growing overall debt burden. Authorities are continuing efforts to recover outstanding payments and address tax evasion. The data provides insight into the ongoing challenges Spain faces in managing its public finances.
