A four-ton piece of a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket crashed into the moon early Wednesday morning at approximately 5,400 miles per hour. The debris is from the second stage of a rocket launched in January 2025, intended for a lunar lander mission by Firefly Aerospace. Unlike typical rocket stages that burn up in Earth’s atmosphere, this piece remained in space due to the high thrust required for the lunar mission and was subsequently nudged towards the moon by solar activity and gravity. Confirmation of the impact was expected to take several hours, reliant on images from telescopes in the Americas, as no orbiting spacecraft were positioned to record it live. The impact occurred in the Einstein Crater on the moon’s western limb, an area not easily visible from Earth. SpaceX confirmed the crash was unintentional, highlighting the growing concern over uncontrolled space debris. Scientists anticipate a plume of lunar dust illuminated by sunlight, but spotting it from Earth will be challenging.
