The Philippines, currently chairing the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean), is intensifying its efforts to finalize the South China Sea Code of Conduct (COC). Foreign Secretary Maria Theresa Lazaro emphasized the COC’s importance, drawing parallels to the volatile situation in the Strait of Hormuz. Concerns over potential disruptions to vital shipping lanes are driving the push for a legally binding agreement among claimant states. Lazaro warned against a similar crisis developing in the South China Sea, highlighting the global economic implications of instability in the region. The COC aims to establish rules for conduct and prevent escalation of disputes in the contested waters. Finalizing the code is seen as crucial for maintaining peace and stability, particularly given rising geopolitical tensions worldwide. The Philippines believes a completed COC will benefit all parties involved and safeguard freedom of navigation.
