In South Africa, the share of Research and Development (R&D) funding sourced from businesses decreased to 29% in the 2022/23 fiscal year. This marks a significant drop from the 41% reported a decade prior. A ministerial working group has responded to this decline by advocating for the implementation of new incentives to encourage greater business investment in R&D. The group also emphasized the need to reduce reliance on funding from international sources. This shift indicates a growing concern about the sustainability of R&D efforts within South Africa, driven by the private sector. The proposed incentives aim to stimulate domestic investment and bolster the country’s innovation capacity. The working group believes a more balanced funding model is crucial for the long-term health of South Africa's research landscape.
