A recent audit by the Solomon Islands Auditor General has revealed significant financial losses due to widespread absenteeism within the public service. The audit estimates that approximately $1 billion (US$124 million) in public resources has been wasted between 2023 and 2025 due to ineffective implementation of the government’s Attendance Management Policy. Auditor General David Teika Dennis is urgently calling on the Ministry of Public Service to enforce this policy. The findings highlight a critical need for improved oversight and accountability within the Solomon Islands' public sector. This loss represents a substantial drain on the nation’s resources, potentially impacting essential services and development projects. The Auditor General’s report seeks to address this widespread issue and ensure responsible use of taxpayer money.
