Taranto is reverting to traditional waste bins after four years of using “smart” bins, deemed a failure by residents and city officials. The initiative, which cost approximately two million euros, did not deliver the anticipated improvements in waste management due to usability issues. Citizens reported the bins were inconvenient, leading to low adoption and ultimately, their replacement. Meanwhile, the city of Bari is currently piloting the same smart bin technology in the Madonnella neighborhood. This contrasting approach suggests differing local contexts and expectations regarding waste collection systems. Bari’s trial will be closely watched to determine if the technology can succeed where it failed in Taranto. The outcome could influence future waste management strategies in other Italian cities.
