Slovakia’s SaS party has cautioned that a tax based on carbon dioxide emissions for cars may be implemented, potentially increasing costs for drivers. The Finance Ministry of Slovakia, however, has stated it currently has no intentions to introduce such a tax. The central bank is reportedly analyzing the potential financial implications of this proposed CO₂-based vehicle tax. This analysis aims to quantify the costs drivers in Slovakia could face if the tax were to be adopted. While the SaS party raises concerns about the potential economic impact, the Finance Ministry’s denial suggests the idea is not currently a priority. The central bank’s work provides a preliminary assessment should policy considerations shift in the future regarding environmental taxation within Slovakia.
