Slovak businesses are joining opposition calls for the government to simplify the country’s Value Added Tax (VAT) system. Current regulations feature multiple VAT rates, creating confusion and administrative burdens for companies. Disparities exist even within basic goods, such as differing rates for domestic fruit and rolls based on weight. The hospitality and leisure sectors face particular challenges, with varying rates applied to on-site dining, delivery, beverages, and even entry fees to facilities like water parks. These complexities are impacting businesses across retail, food service, and tourism. Critics argue the three-tiered system is unnecessarily complicated and hinders economic activity, prompting demands for a comprehensive overhaul to improve clarity and reduce compliance costs.
