Singapore’s digital identity system, Singpass, has introduced passkeys, a new security feature designed to replace traditional passwords. These passkeys transform mobile devices into digital keys, bolstering security against phishing attacks. Unlike passwords, passkeys are unique to each website and cannot be reused, mitigating the risk of large-scale data breaches. The system adheres to open industry standards co-developed by tech giants like Google and Apple, ensuring broad compatibility and interoperability. This update aims to provide a more secure and user-friendly authentication experience for citizens accessing government and private sector services. The implementation of passkeys marks a significant step towards passwordless authentication and a more robust digital ecosystem in Singapore. This new method is intended to render conventional phishing scams ineffective.
