Initial reports of two dolphins frequenting the waters near Lauwersoog, Netherlands, have been corrected; observers now believe it is a single, highly active male dolphin. SOS Dolfijn, a marine mammal organization, reached this conclusion after analyzing photographic and video evidence. The initial misidentification stemmed from the dolphin’s energetic movements and the way its tail fin occasionally surfaced, creating the illusion of a second animal. The dolphin appears healthy and does not exhibit the apathetic behavior typically seen in distressed marine mammals. Its unusual habit of lingering near buoys in the Wadden Sea is noted as interesting, but not unprecedented, potentially lasting for weeks or months. While common dolphins are not typically found in the Wadden Sea, their presence is becoming increasingly frequent in the North Sea.
