New regulations taking effect in July limit extracorporeal shockwave therapy (ESWT) to a maximum of 12 sessions annually, with a maximum of six sessions per treated area. South Korea’s Financial Supervisory Service (FSS) has concurrently established dispute resolution guidelines related to these limitations. This move aims to standardize treatment protocols and address potential conflicts arising from varying session counts. The FSS guidelines will provide a framework for resolving disputes between patients and medical institutions concerning ESWT coverage and appropriate session numbers. Prior to these regulations, there was no standardized limit on the number of ESWT sessions, leading to inconsistencies in treatment and potential overutilization. The new rules and dispute resolution process are intended to ensure fair and consistent application of ESWT treatment across the country.
