Over a century ago, Serbia had a developed system of healthcare cooperatives, a practice that has since largely disappeared. These cooperatives represented a form of collective healthcare organization, allowing communities to pool resources and access medical services. Today, such collaborative models are virtually nonexistent within Serbia. Experts suggest revisiting these historical approaches could address current challenges in healthcare access and affordability. The benefits of a return to cooperative healthcare could be significant, especially in rural areas where access to medical care is often limited. Re-establishing these structures could empower communities to take a more active role in managing their healthcare needs, mirroring successful strategies from Serbia’s past. The question now is whether Serbia can learn from its own history and re-implement these effective systems.
