Serbia has a critically low rate of organ donation, with only six donors per million citizens, according to Dr. Dragan Delić, a physician and member of parliament. Delić attributes this scarcity to a lack of public trust in the healthcare system and the need for support from the Serbian Orthodox Church (SPC). He was commenting on the recently enacted Law on Human Organ Transplantation. The law aims to improve the organ donation process, but Delić suggests that addressing public skepticism and gaining religious endorsement are crucial for increasing donation rates. He believes that bolstering confidence in the medical system and securing the SPC’s backing will be essential to encourage more people to become donors. The current rate significantly limits the availability of organs for transplant recipients in the country. Further efforts are needed to overcome these barriers and improve access to life-saving transplants.
