A widely circulated image on social media falsely claimed Senegal’s President Bassirou Diomaye Faye increased electricity subsidies from 250 to 729 billion FCFA, leading many to believe electricity prices would fall. SENELEC’s Director General, Papa Toby Gaye, clarified that the image is fraudulent and did not originate from the company, denouncing the unauthorized use of their logo. He emphasized that the figures presented were inaccurate and that the overall energy subsidy, including petroleum products, should not be confused with a subsidy solely for electricity. While the government has increased energy support due to rising international prices, this does not guarantee lower electricity costs for consumers. SENELEC warns the misinformation could create unrealistic expectations about energy pricing. The company has condemned this digital identity theft and its potential to mislead the public.
