The creation of Senegal’s new political party, Kiiraay – Les Patriotes Républicains, led by President Bassirou Diomaye Faye, has triggered strong opposition from within the former political movement loyal to Ousmane Sonko. French lawyer Juan Branco, a key defender of Sonko and Pastef during years of political crisis, has publicly denounced the move as a betrayal of Pastef's foundational sovereignist ideals. Branco specifically criticizes a reported offer of a golf course to President Faye by the US President as humiliating and a compromise of national sovereignty. He directly links the establishment of Kiiraay to the sacrifices made by Pastef militants during a period of political repression, suggesting Faye’s actions disrespect their memory. Branco’s statement is marked by harsh rhetoric and an unforgiving tone regarding past suffering, referencing deaths, imprisonment, and torture. This is not Branco’s first critical statement regarding Faye’s leadership following Sonko’s dismissal from the primature.
