Albino individuals in Senegal, who have historically faced challenges accessing sunscreen, are now producing their own through a laboratory established by the Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency (TİKA). This initiative marks a first for both Senegal and West Africa, addressing a critical health need for a vulnerable population. The project empowers the albino community by providing a sustainable solution to protect against sun-related health risks. Previously, limited access to sunscreen led to increased rates of skin cancer and social exclusion among people with albinism. TİKA’s support includes not only the laboratory infrastructure but also training and resources for local production. The locally-made sunscreen is expected to improve the quality of life for albino Senegalese citizens and potentially be distributed throughout the wider West African region. This development represents a significant step towards self-sufficiency and improved healthcare access.
