Senegal and the United Nations have finalized an agreement establishing a new regional UN headquarters in Diamniadio, near Dakar. The agreement, signed June 12th, culminates years of negotiations and paves the way for the relocation of UN entities currently based in the country. President Bassirou Diomaye Faye’s involvement was crucial in overcoming final hurdles to the project. The United Nations House (MONUD), inaugurated in November 2023, will consolidate all UN operations focused on West and Central Africa. The 13-hectare complex features 1,800 offices, conference facilities, and amenities for the approximately 2,400 UN staff. Construction began in 2019 at a cost of 175 billion francs, and the move signifies Senegal’s strengthened strategic partnership with the UN and commitment to sustainable development goals.
