Former Senegalese Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko oversaw a period of active economic diplomacy during his two years in office, resulting in approximately 50 international agreements. These agreements were secured through 11 official visits to partner countries, focusing on bolstering Senegal’s economic ties. A significant portion of the deals, totaling around $100 billion in funding through loans and grants, came from a visit to China, with agreements spanning industry, housing, and transportation. Other key partnerships were established with Turkey, the United Arab Emirates – focusing on energy, mining, and healthcare – and several African nations. Cooperation with Gambia, Mauritania, Guinea-Bissau, and Burkina Faso centered on infrastructure, agriculture, security, and regional stability, including discussions regarding the Casamance region. The agreements demonstrate a concerted effort to diversify Senegal’s international partnerships and attract investment across multiple sectors.
