A Quranic teacher in Diourbel, Senegal, has been sentenced to 15 days in prison and fined 50,000 FCFA for violence against minors and exploiting their begging. The teacher, identified as M. Dramé, admitted to chaining seven students, aged 9 to 14, to prevent them from leaving his school, known as a daara. He claimed he had the parents’ consent and that the children were forced to beg to support the daara and his own needs due to insufficient funding from families. The students corroborated the claims of chaining and forced begging in court, but did not seek damages. While the prosecution requested a two-year suspended sentence, the defense pleaded for leniency, arguing the teacher was unaware of the illegality of his actions. The court found him guilty and imposed the 15-day sentence and fine, acknowledging the charges of child abuse and exploitation.
