Former Senegalese Minister of Economy, Abdourahmane Sarr, has publicly questioned the statements made by the IMF’s mission chief for Senegal, Mercedes Vera Martin, regarding the country’s debt situation. Sarr argues Martin's declarations contain an inconsistency concerning Senegal’s debt sustainability. He recalls that he and a former colleague previously maintained the nation’s debt was manageable and did not require reduction, emphasizing that interest payments weren’t the primary budgetary concern. Sarr references a 2026 macroeconomic report supporting their earlier analysis. He highlights a contradiction in Martin’s statements, where she indicated the IMF could proceed with its program without full debt resolution within the G20 framework, yet requires "financing assurances" and a commitment to debt restructuring to “restore sustainability.” Sarr asserts a clear choice must be made between these conflicting positions. The new agreement between Senegal and the IMF is still pending approval from the institution’s leadership.
