Senegal’s National Lunar Crescent Concertation Commission (CONACOC) has officially announced the dates for the start of Muharram and the observance of Tamxarite in 2026. Following observations by a network of 485 representatives across the country, and consultations with religious leaders, the commission confirmed the sighting of the lunar crescent. As a result, Wednesday, June 17, 2026, will mark the first day of Muharram, initiating the 1448th year of the Islamic calendar. The traditional Tamxarite dinner, commemorating the 10th day of Muharram, will be held on Thursday, June 25, 2026. Tamxarite is a significant religious observance in Senegal, characterized by prayer, reflection, and family gatherings centered around a traditional meal. The dates were determined after centralizing information and cross-referencing observations nationwide.
