Scotland is undertaking a large-scale restoration project to revitalize its ancient peatlands, specifically the globally significant Flow Country. Decades ago, commercial tree plantations were established across these sensitive 9,000-year-old ecosystems, negatively impacting their ecological function. Conservationists are now actively removing these trees to reverse the damage and promote the natural regeneration of peatland vegetation. This work aims to restore vital wildlife habitats and crucially, preserve the vast amounts of carbon stored within the peat. The project recognizes the importance of peatlands as a key component in combating climate change and protecting biodiversity. By removing the trees, Scotland hopes to maintain the ecological integrity of this World Heritage Site for future generations.
