A high school in Oud-Beijerland has cancelled a planned trip to France due to ongoing unrest in the country related to student protests. Students intended to spend a week with host families in Mantes-la-Jolie, near Paris, but will now travel to Drenthe instead. The protests in France stem from issues within the secondary education system including overcrowded classrooms, teacher shortages, and high workloads, and have sometimes escalated into violent clashes with police, resulting in injuries and arrests. A 15-year-old student in Lens recently lost a hand due to an exploding stun grenade during a protest. While Mantes-la-Jolie was initially calm, increasing concerns about potential unrest led school officials to reverse their decision. Parents and students reacted with understanding, many having communicated with their counterparts at the school’s sister school in Mantes-la-Jolie and being aware of the situation; other students from the school are travelling to England, Prague, or Berlin.
