Mozambique’s President Daniel Chapo inaugurated the SADC Regional Monitoring, Control and Surveillance Coordination Center in KaTembe, aimed at bolstering regional cooperation against illegal fishing. The center will serve as a platform for coordinated efforts to protect the sustainable use of fisheries resources in Southern Africa. President Chapo emphasized the facility represents a significant step towards collective monitoring and enforcement of aquatic resources. Illegal, unreported, and unregulated fishing poses a major threat to the region’s food security, employment, and state revenues, costing an estimated $400 million annually within SADC. The new center aims to mitigate these losses through information sharing and harmonized strategies. Chapo highlighted the center as more than just a physical structure, but a hub for knowledge and joint action to safeguard the region’s valuable aquatic ecosystems.
