The UK’s Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) has launched an investigation into Ryanair’s practice of charging fees for guaranteed seating arrangements for families. While Ryanair requires children aged two to eleven to sit with at least one parent, it charges an additional fee for families to ensure they are seated together. The CMA is concerned this practice may breach consumer law, specifically regarding transparency and fairness of pricing. The investigation will focus on whether these mandatory charges are presented clearly to customers during the booking process and if they constitute an unfair practice. Ryanair defends the policy as a means to allow all customers the option of choosing their seats, with those who do not pay being seated separately. The CMA stated it will continue to investigate and will publish its findings in due course. This action follows similar concerns raised regarding other airlines’ seating policies.
