The fifth annual Mt Rwenzori Marathon in Uganda has demonstrated the potential for tourism diversification to bolster the country’s economy. Despite the significant setbacks to Uganda’s tourism sector caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, the marathon attracted 8,000 runners from over 42 countries. This represents a substantial increase in participation, with a 33% rise in attendees, signaling strong recovery. The event highlights the possibilities open to Uganda by expanding its tourism offerings beyond traditional wildlife safaris. Organizers suggest the success indicates the eagerness of international travelers to engage with Uganda’s natural beauty and cultural experiences. The Mt Rwenzori Marathon serves as a compelling example of how strategic tourism initiatives can contribute to economic revitalization in Uganda. It underscores the importance of investing in diverse tourism projects to build resilience against future global disruptions.
