US Secretary of State Marco Rubio concluded a Middle East tour aimed at reassuring Gulf allies that any potential deal with Iran will prioritize their security interests. Addressing the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) in Bahrain, Rubio emphasized that Washington seeks a lasting peace with Iran without compromising the stability and economic prosperity of the region. A key concern raised by GCC nations is Iran’s potential control over the Strait of Hormuz, a vital waterway for global oil supplies, and the possibility of disrupting maritime traffic. Rubio stated that no nation has the right to impose fees for passage through international waters, a clear reference to Iranian actions. The visit followed a preliminary US-Iran framework agreement intended to end ongoing conflict, and Rubio’s mission was to address skepticism among regional partners. Oman’s announcement of a safe passage corridor through the Strait of Hormuz was welcomed during the GCC meeting. Rubio previously visited the United Arab Emirates and Kuwait to deliver similar assurances regarding the deal’s fairness.
