Major rail repairs near Rotterdam are expected to continue until Monday morning, delaying services between Rotterdam and areas to the south. ProRail initially anticipated repairs would be completed this weekend, but the extent of the damage proved far greater than first estimated – now at 200 damaged cables instead of 100. The damage was caused by a fire in a cable duct on Monday, and the repair process is extremely intricate, involving welding individual wires within the cables. Complicating matters further, identifying the correct cables is difficult as identifying labels were destroyed in the fire. Limited space in the cable duct restricts the number of workers, slowing the process. Passengers are advised to use replacement bus services between Rotterdam Centraal, Zwijndrecht and surrounding stations, while international and freight trains are being diverted.
