Rotterdam has implemented a unique, nightly area ban in the De Esch neighborhood, effective immediately. The ban criminalizes presence in the area between 11 PM and 5 AM for individuals without a legitimate reason, punishable by a fine. This measure addresses years of escalating disturbances, including street racing, drug use, and prostitution, primarily caused by outsiders. While considered a drastic step, authorities emphasize it’s a necessary response after less severe interventions – like increased surveillance and concrete barriers – proved insufficient. Exemptions apply to residents, visitors, workers, and those attending events or visiting businesses. The ban will be evaluated after three months, with the goal of restoring peace and safety for De Esch residents, according to Mayor Carola Schouten. The local council unanimously supported the decision, recognizing its severity but deeming it the most effective solution.
