The city of Rotterdam has fired two municipal officials following an investigation into bribery related to construction projects, including the asbestos remediation of the Boijmans Van Beuningen Museum. The dismissals came after the Public Prosecutor's Office updated the city on findings that revealed the officials’ actions were “substantially more serious” than previously believed. The investigation, triggered by reporting from NRC newspaper in late 2023 regarding tender fraud, has broadened to include six companies and eleven suspects, including the three former officials. One official was previously sent into early retirement, while two others were suspended during the initial investigation. This incident is part of a pattern of corruption within Rotterdam's municipal government, with previous cases resulting in dismissals and even prison sentences for officials accepting bribes. Authorities have searched multiple homes and business properties as part of the ongoing criminal probe.
