Leaders opposing a potential coalition government within Romania’s National Liberal Party (PNL) have filed a flurry of urgent legal challenges at the Ilfov Tribunal. Since the beginning of the year, the tribunal has received 41 requests for presidential ordinances, but none were granted same-day hearings until today. The expedited hearing granted to the dissenting PNL faction sought to overturn decisions made in a recent party meeting. These decisions included the PNL’s refusal to join a government led by proposed Prime Minister Gabriel Veștea and the threatened expulsion of party members who do participate. The swift court action suggests a deepening internal conflict within the PNL regarding the formation of the next Romanian government. The tribunal approved the request on the same day it was submitted, a departure from previous handling of similar cases.
