Romania’s Superior Council of Magistracy (CSM) has issued a strongly worded statement alleging a “coup d’état” against the judiciary. The CSM claims the government, specifically naming the PNL, USR parties, and Bihor County Council President Ilie Bolojan, is attempting a forceful overhaul of the legal system and key personnel. The 77-page document details these accusations, asserting that protests are part of a coordinated effort to undermine the courts. The CSM has formally requested information from the Gendarmerie regarding the number of participants in demonstrations against the judiciary. The council states it is acting on behalf of Romania’s 3,580 judges. The CSM’s statement suggests it also views the ruling PSD party as a target of this alleged power grab. This escalation marks a significant conflict between the judiciary and political forces in Romania.
