Romania’s High Court of Cassation and Justice (ICCJ) is expected to deliver a verdict Thursday in the case of Timișoara Mayor Dominic Fritz, who is challenging a report from the National Integrity Agency (ANI). ANI inspectors previously found Fritz to be in a conflict of interest regarding a zoning plan modification. The agency alleges Fritz approved a report altering a local urban plan (PUZ) which was then submitted to the local council for approval. Technical documentation for the beneficiary of the PUZ was prepared by a firm owned by USR local councilor Răzvan Negrișanu, who had previously loaned Fritz 25,000 lei during his mayoral campaign. Fritz contested ANI’s findings, arguing against the conflict of interest claim. The court’s decision will determine whether the ANI’s report stands or if Fritz is cleared of the allegations. The case has drawn attention due to Fritz’s position as a prominent figure in the USR party.
