The future multi-annual budget of the European Union is expected to increase by 10%, with Romania poised to receive an additional €6 billion in European funds. This increase, proposed by the European Parliament, surpasses the initial draft from the European Commission. The funding boost for Romania will be financed through supplementary taxation of major international technology companies. Additionally, online gambling will be subject to new taxes to contribute to the increased budget. Siegfried Mureșan, the chief negotiator, has specifically targeted Elon Musk, Mark Zuckerberg, and Jeff Bezos with these proposed tax measures. The aim is to ensure sufficient resources for EU programs and member state development, including a significant uplift for Romania. This shift reflects a growing trend towards taxing digital giants to support public finances.
