Romania’s national road administration company, CNAIR, announced Friday that the implementation of road tolls – both the vignette system and the new TollRo system – will begin on October 1, 2026. This marks a delay in the planned rollout of the updated tolling infrastructure. The announcement provides a definitive start date for the new system, which has been under development for some time. The TollRo system aims to offer a more advanced and potentially fairer method of charging road users. Currently, Romania relies primarily on a time-based vignette system for road usage fees. The implementation date allows time for final testing and preparation of the necessary infrastructure. Motorists should anticipate changes to road payment procedures beginning in the fall of 2026.
