Romania is amending its highway construction regulations to include emergency lanes on all expressways, following a series of serious accidents on the DEx12 Craiova-Pitești route. The Ministry of Transport has revised the technical standards governing high-speed road construction in response to safety concerns. Previously, Romanian expressways lacked dedicated emergency lanes, a feature standard on motorways. State Secretary Horațiu Cosma highlighted the DEx12 as an example where the absence of these lanes contributed to severe incidents. The updated regulations aim to improve safety and reduce the risk of accidents on the country’s growing expressway network. This change brings expressways in line with motorway standards regarding emergency access and vehicle breakdown protocols. The modifications are expected to be implemented in future expressway projects and potentially retrofitted on existing routes.
