A remarkably preserved Roman sculpture of a phallus, crafted from bone, has been discovered in the storage reserves of the Valkhof Museum in the Netherlands. The artifact was found during a large-scale inventory of the museum’s collection, which includes 16,000 previously unexamined boxes. Archaeologists made the find while cataloging items in the museum’s basement. The sculpture’s existence was previously unknown to museum staff. Its discovery offers new insights into Roman artistry and cultural practices. The museum plans further research and potential public display of the artifact. The finding highlights the potential for unexpected discoveries within existing museum collections.
