The UN reports that two boats carrying over 500 Rohingya refugees may have capsized off the coast of Myanmar, with fears of a high death toll. The vessels, departing from Rakhine State in late June, carried mostly Rohingya Muslims, including some from Bangladeshi refugee camps. These journeys are increasingly dangerous, occurring outside the regular sailing season and in hazardous sea conditions. The Rohingya are fleeing ongoing violence and desperate conditions in Myanmar and Bangladesh, seeking better lives in countries like Malaysia, Indonesia, and Thailand. Last year, nearly 900 Rohingya died or went missing at sea, making this route the world’s deadliest for refugees. Myanmar denies abuses against the Rohingya, continuing a long history of persecution that has fueled the refugee crisis since 2017.
