Dutch consumers face significantly higher energy bills as gas and electricity prices surge, according to the Authority for Consumers & Markets (ACM). The price of gas has more than doubled since the outbreak of the Iranoorlog, currently standing at 80 euros per megawatt hour. This increase is largely due to disruptions in the supply of liquefied gas from the Middle East following American bombardments on Iran and the near-closure of the Strait of Hormuz. The rising gas prices are also impacting electricity prices, as gas-fired power plants contribute to the Netherlands’ power generation. Furthermore, the ACM highlights that Dutch gas storage facilities are currently only half full – lower than previous years and compared to other European nations – requiring expensive replenishment. Consumers are advised to review their energy contracts before the heating season begins, as fixed-rate contracts have reached a three-year high with a 4 percent increase in the last month.
