A new book, “Piraña,” details the illicit rhino poaching trade in Africa, revealing the staggering prices paid for rhino horn on the black market. According to the book, cited by Blesk, a kilogram of rhino horn can fetch as much as 10 million Czech crowns, equivalent to approximately €415,000. This exceptionally high price fuels the dangerous and illegal practice of poaching, threatening already vulnerable rhino populations. The book sheds light on the dark underbelly of this trade, highlighting the immense financial incentives driving the criminal activity. The information underscores the continued demand for rhino horn, primarily driven by unfounded beliefs in its medicinal properties. Authorities are struggling to combat the poaching crisis despite increased efforts to protect rhinos and disrupt trafficking networks. The escalating prices demonstrate the profitability of the illegal trade and the challenges in curbing it.
