A red alert for extreme temperatures has been issued for seven Romanian counties – Maramureș, Satu Mare, Sălaj, Bihor, Arad, Timiș, and Caraș-Severin – starting at 10:00 AM today. The National Meteorological Administration (ANM) forecasts temperatures reaching 41 degrees Celsius in the shade, particularly in western regions. Approximately three million Romanians will experience these dangerous heat conditions on Wednesday and Thursday. The heatwave is expected to subside starting Friday, with cooler weather and rainfall anticipated in the north of the country. Authorities are advising residents to take precautions against heatstroke and dehydration. This extreme heat poses significant risks to vulnerable populations, including the elderly and those with pre-existing medical conditions. The alert highlights the increasing impact of climate change on Romania.
