Over 10,000 participants have registered for this weekend’s “Night of the Refugee,” a sponsored nighttime walk raising funds for the Dutch Refugee Foundation. Participants are walking distances of 10, 20, 40, or 50 kilometers, collecting sponsorship money for each kilometer completed. Multiple routes are available across the Netherlands. Proceeds will directly support emergency aid efforts in conflict zones, including Lebanon, Somalia, and Afghanistan. Organizers report this is a record number of participants, surpassing last year’s 8,000 walkers who raised €1.5 million. As of today, the event has already generated €1.7 million. The Dutch Refugee Foundation’s director, Benoit De Gryse, stated the high turnout demonstrates strong public solidarity with refugees amidst declining support.
