A record 96 gharial hatchlings have emerged at Bardiya National Park’s breeding center in Nepal, representing the most successful hatching in nearly ten years. This offers a vital boost to conservation efforts for the critically endangered species. Despite this positive development, gharials continue to face significant threats to their survival. Pollution within the rivers, coupled with ongoing habitat loss, pose substantial risks to the growing population. Entanglement in fishing nets remains a deadly problem for these ancient reptiles. Conservationists are cautiously optimistic but emphasize the need for continued protective measures to ensure the long-term recovery of Nepal’s gharial population and the health of its river ecosystems. The hatchlings will be monitored closely as they mature, representing a crucial step in preventing the species’ extinction.
