Japanese conglomerate Rakuten Group is set to become the first Japanese company to offer communication services utilizing its own low-earth orbit (LEO) satellite network. According to the Yomiuri Shimbun, Rakuten aims to establish an independent communication infrastructure, directly challenging SpaceX’s Starlink dominance in the sector. The company plans to launch its initial satellites in 2025, with a goal of providing connectivity to underserved areas and enhancing network resilience. This initiative signifies a major investment in space-based communication technology by Rakuten. The network will initially focus on serving Japan, with potential for expansion into other regions. Rakuten intends to leverage this network for various applications, including internet access and disaster response. This move positions Rakuten as a key player in the growing LEO satellite communication market.
