A majority in the Tweede Kamer has voted to fly the rainbow flag at the Tweede Kamergebouw on Sunday. The decision follows a heated internal debate and a reversal of an earlier decision by the Tweede Kamer’s presidium, its daily board. Initially, the presidium approved a proposal by staff to raise the flag in support of the lhbtiq+-community on coming-out day, but rescinded it after objections from smaller Christian parties, particularly the SGP. The SGP argued against flying the rainbow flag, stating it represents activism rather than national identity. Opposition parties, including Pro, Partij voor de Dieren, 50Plus and Volt, successfully challenged the presidium’s decision, arguing the Tweede Kamer should advocate for global lhbtiq+ rights. This will mark the first time the rainbow flag will be displayed at the Tweede Kamergebouw, following the flying of the Ukrainian flag in February 2024. The vote was 90 in favor and 36 against.
